Jon Swindler (born 1976) is a Professor of Art and Area Chair of Printmaking and Book Arts in the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia. He holds a BFA in Studio Art and Art Education from Fort Hays State University and an MFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Swindler has exhibited widely in solo, invitational, and juried exhibitions both nationally and internationally, and has presented workshops and lectures at institutions including the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Academy of Cincinnati, HDK School of Design and Craft (Sweden), the Academy of Visual Arts (Belgium), and the Society of Northern Alberta Print Artists (Canada).
Swindler’s practice threads two distinct lines of inquiry through printmaking: an investigation into the unforeseen and an exploration of the unseen. In the former, he uses the printing matrix as a generative drawing tool, building layered compositions through unscripted processes that prioritize chance, material response, and accumulation. While guided by decisions of color and sequence, the work embraces unpredictability—allowing process to dictate outcome.
In parallel, his work engages a more deliberate and contemplative approach, often through woodcuts, screenprint and etching. Using a semi-recognizable pastoral language, he explores themes of landscape, memory, and human intervention. Influenced by rural environments in Georgia and his native Kansas, his imagery reflects both natural cycles of growth and erosion and the visible traces of industry and agriculture. Through technically rigorous processes of carving and printing, Swindler seeks to reconcile control and intuition, producing works that consider both the physical and metaphysical dimensions of place.
